Not the blankets. Not the embroidered love notes drawn for me by my favorite children-friends. Not the Kitchen-Aid mixer (but almost). Nope, the best present I ever got was totally unexpected and so wholly meaningful that I don't think anything will ever top it.

A couple summers ago my son's father was diagnosed with cancer and he lost his left eye to it. The following year they found it in his lymph system. The second time around was particularly hard for me and I started having really terrible nightmares (he has been cancer-free for over a year now). I told my friend Léa about them in conversation and went on with my week. Shortly thereafter I came home to find this on my porch.

What's the best present you ever got?
